Very pleased to have contributed to this much-needed service in India. Infected deformed diabetic foot, if not treated correctly, results in an amputation. Surgical reconstruction is a very complex procedure in this group of patients and requires a multidisciplinary support. Having established the multidisciplinary service recently, it is very rewarding to see satisfied patients following surgeries performed during my India visit last week!
Shared the top tips on combined hindfoot and midfoot Charcot reconstruction surgery.
Covered the comprehensive management of Charcot foot.
Established and formally launched a charity organisation, UKIDFF (UK India Diabetic Foot Foundation) to support the clinicians in India that manage diabetic foot patients with free advice from an expert multidisciplinary team on the treatment of all diabetic foot conditions. On its 40th anniversary, King’s Diabetic Foot Clinic had been renamed as ‘Mike Edmonds Foot Unit’!
It was a privilege to have witnessed and been part of this history! When the first multidisciplinary diabetic foot clinic in the world was set up by Prof Edmonds at King’s College Hospital, the impact on reduction in amputation rates was so much that WHO had soon recommended it as the standard of care. On its 40th anniversary, King’s Diabetic Foot Clinic had been renamed as ‘Mike Edmonds Foot Unit’! A fitting tribute to his contribution to the diabetic foot care in the UK and worldwide. Very fortunate to have been part of this team for 15 years and leading the orthopaedic component of our service!
